A full-size ruler that folds into your pen case
Most of us carry a 15 cm ruler because it's the only size that fits in a pen case, then end up sliding it along the page whenever we need a longer line. Midori fixed that by putting a hinge in the middle. Folded, this ruler is about 16 cm long. Open it up and you've got a full 30 cm, and the hinge holds firm so your line stays straight right across the join.
It's made of aluminum, so it's light (just 31 g) but sturdy enough to use as a cutting edge with a craft knife. The scale is laser-engraved instead of printed, which means the markings won't rub off over the years. The front edge is marked every millimeter, with half-millimeter marks for the first 5 cm when you need extra precision. The back edge has a 15 cm zero-start scale for measuring right from a corner or edge.
There's a nice bonus on the hinge, too: angle markings every 15°, so you can set and draw an angle without a protractor. It's a small, quiet tool that won a Good Design Award in 2013, and it's the kind of thing you'll keep for years.
One note: the scale is metric only, with no inch markings.
